Yoga derives from Indian traditions that embody the unity of mind, body and spirit. It is a holistic approach to health and wellbeing that is not only about exercise but about becoming conscious of the oneness between man and nature.

To commemorate the practice, 21 June 2015 was declared as the inaugural International Yoga Day, and is recognized by the United Nations. For the third year in a row, Capetonians are coming together to celebrate International Yoga Day 2018 by bringing all of the different yoga communities together to practice as one.

As the 21st of June falls on a Wednesday, the organisers of the International Day of Yoga 2018 Cape Town have decided to host the event on Saturday the 16th of June 2018 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

On the day, there will be two sessions to choose from, either the

  • 08h30 – 13h00 morning session, or the
  • 14h00 – 19h00 afternoon session.

Each session features an array of activities, such as yoga sessions, yoga workshops, demonstrations and markets, where guests can purchase various yoga related products, such as clothing, mats, water bottles, mat bags and more.

The International Day of Yoga 2018 Cape Town is hosted and sponsored by Yoga and Fitness Instructor, Joelle Sleebos, a well-known name in the South African yoga community. Major sports brand, adidas, will also be sponsoring the event and will be offering a free adidas goodie bag to the first 250 people to arrive at each session.

This event is free, but tickets must be booked beforehand to attend. Visit the Joelle Sleebos website to book tickets, remember to specify which session you’d like to attend (either 08h30 to 113h00 or 14h00 to 19:00).

In return for the free event, the organisers have requested that attendees donate to the Earth Child Project, a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation that brings yoga, mindfulness and organic gardening practices to children in disadvantaged areas. Donations can be made to the Earth Child Project while you’re booking your ticket.

One final note, don’t forget to bring your yoga mat on the day as there will only be a limited amount of mats to rent on the day.
